Life is full of difficult times and hard circumstances, isn’t it? Things which send us reeling, feeling that life has entered an out-of-control tailspin. Our family is facing one now. Perhaps the hardest we’ve ever faced.
We’ve been through many such times, as I’m sure most of us have. Times when we find it hard to read or pray. Times when we desperately need God’s marvelous peace – but it seems to slip away in a cloud of worry or anxiety. And yet it is in those times that we most need such peace!
Yet God’s peace is not something we can work up. We can not give ourselves pep rallies repeating “I will not worry, will not worry, will not worry.” It just won’t work, especially in extenuating circumstances.
So just how can we grasp and hold on to that peace that passes all understanding even in the hard times?
How to find and keep God’s peace:
1. Remember it comes through relationship.
Through the relationship we’ve already cultivated with the Lord. And a constant habit of leaving our burdens with him in prayer. It is that will help us remember that he is near – in good times and in bad.
God was there when Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into jail. He was there when Christ was nailed to the cross. And he is there during our hard times and trials.
2. We find it by trusting God’s sovereignty.
Realizing that he is full control and working out his greater plans really helps to cancel out all our what-ifs and whys. He had a family’s salvation in mind with the imprisonment of Paul and Silas. And the salvation of humanity through Christ’s crucifixion. And though we may never know why he allows some things, we know he has only good in mind.
Resting in God’s sovereignty brings that peace which transcends our human understanding – because it comes straight down from eternity. From our sovereign God who is working all things out for good. And in that we can rest.
The peace of God can only come from the God of peace.
